British Broadens Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Alert Roster with An additional 11 Destinations
The UK authorities has added 11 further nations to its travel advisory list regarding the threats of industrial alcohol poisoning from contaminated spirits.
The updated warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to reports of "a worldwide rise in the number of reported cases" of toxic alcohol toxicity.
Just a few weeks ago, authorities had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing list, following multiple serious events like the tragic demise of six tourists in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being warned that as little as small amounts of toxic alcohol can lead to blindness or fatality within 12–48 hrs.
What is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Utilized?
Methanol is a toxic substance often used in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. This substance is not designed for human consumption.
Although it is inherently formed during the manufacture of alcoholic drinks, reputable manufacturers lower it to low, safe levels for drinking through the purification method.
However in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to cut costs, and because it is tasteless and scentless, it is impossible to notice.
Government Recommendations for Travelers
Authorities minister a senior official stated that every traveler should know the symptoms of toxic alcohol contamination.
"When you are consuming alcohol in foreign countries, choose well-known venues and avoid unlicensed drinks or free shots," Falconer warned.
"Should anything seems unusual, such as a fatigue that's way worse than normal or vision problems – contact a doctor fast."
The complete list of destinations noted as presenting a danger of methanol toxicity now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
